A famous science writer, depicting Mrs. Eddy from all he could find where he looked for her, laments of egotism because she once asked her Church members to buy gold spoons, to pay for a project - on the spoon was the motto, not matter but Mind satisfies. It was a long wait for that final explanation but it was worth it: the Bible says even enemies shall bless. But we may suppose that writer was listening to the 'gay' chatter, whispering, she made something of matter: inviting us to ponder what the 'gay' was talking about - for, this, we should know is the very argument of error: that matter exists and that gold is matter and that she made a spoon of gold, and that therefore she made something out of what she calls nothing: let her make the spoon of nothing altogether, suggests error - she did, we may reply, and put it down, beneath mere soup; but examining error's argument we detect that the first claim was its first falsity, the second was its second, inducing error from error but never achieving truth: that she made a spoon of gold we should even question, as gold is not by any means required, and the spoon's purpose is not to form gold into some utensil, but to serve man's thought of destiny above every claim above error - what does not burn as chaff may be ash used in some cement, and so on, yet never touching the wheat's purpose. And to suggest that she should be deified because it should require all the power a deity may express, to make something of nothing, is to ignore the simplicity of turning on the light and making room of the darkness: filling an empty space with something certainly makes something where nothing seemed to be - the dark nothing couldn't prevent you, though the 'gay' says it did (because the 'gay', in subterfuge, refused to do it himself the moment he claimed that nothingness: he didn't make the nothingness; nor did he make something of that nothingness himself - therefore the 'gay' is the liar and the father of his lie: nothing saying it is something (that, is or can be) remaining nothing, (no 'but's about it), but we fill our thought of it immediately with the discernment of love's illume - we love the vastness of Truth, and so fill the whole known cosmos with God's presence - and so prove the nothingness of that nothing, not by saying it is something remaining nothing, but by making something that is something.
Mrs. Eddy tells us, Christian Science is that higher criticism (higher than 'gay' diatribe) because, it alone makes nothing of evil (error); it makes evil unreal because impossible in divine Science.
